    Capstone Project Goals.

    With my sociology, humanities, and teaching courses, my main goal is to take the previous academic experience I have explained thus far and apply it to to my capstone project. I will be applying those academic experiences  to my capstone project utilizing the Sociological Imagination and interdisciplinary research to produce insight from common ground in order to answer my research question. 

    • To be able to conduct a thorough literacy review to expand current knowledge and gain breadth of knowledge in order to understand bulimia nervosa (BN) in a social, psychological, and biological way. 
    • To be able to answer my research question to the best of my ability: How will redefining bulimia nervosa impact the current understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of eating disorders in young girls and women in western society?”
    • To influence and provide better explanations to current theories and ideas the medical field associates with BN.
    • To be able to utilize interdisciplinary studies in future projects and assignments during graduate school. 
    • To gain skills necessary for future career openings who look for interdisciplinary skills. 
    • To enhance the lives of those around me who can benefit from interdisciplinary studies and the research I will be conducting. 

    Courses Essential for Capstone Project.

    Improvements to be Made.

    1. Provide more extensive and specific research that supports my research question. 
    2. Replace biological disciplines with more specific eating disorder related biology divisions such as neurology. 
    3. Redesign research question to allow for a thesis that can support research question.
    4. Look for personal bias when reading research. I need to remember not to cherry pick ideas and statistics that support what I want to be supported.  
    5. Stay on research scope. I notice I have the tendency to find research outside the scope of what I actually need. 
    • SOC 215: Race and Ethnic Relations. Completed 2016, A. In this course I learned how to use the Sociological Imagination to look at individual problems as social problems. This point of view can be carried out in other disciplines to examine ideas from different perspectives. I have used the Sociological Imagination in political science courses as well as in teaching courses. 
    • HUM 101: Introduction to the Humanities. Completed 2015, A. In this course I was able to examine cultural products such as art, music, literature, and sculptures through a broad lens that took in account historical context. In order to understand why cultural products are created, we need to understand what they were created for. Being able to view products as a personal private exchange can open perspectives on past cultural beliefs and feelings.
    •  TSM 360: Perspectives on Science, Philosophy of Science. Completed 2017, A. This course prepared me to look into an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the foundation of science. From this interdisciplinary view I came out of the class understanding science is not absolute and there are many ways in which the world can be perceived and understood. 
    • SOC 318: Sociology of Medicine, Health and Illness. Completed 2019, A. This course connected my current mental illness to the underpinnings of why my eating disorder may have developed. I gathered a strong sense of questioning ability to the problems of our health system along with doctor bias.
